➤ Why does the unemployment rate differ from the unemployment count?
An unemployment count is an absolute number of people without work. The unemployment rate expresses that number as a percentage of the labor force. A stable count can produce different rates if the labor force grows or shrinks. Rates also change with labor force participation, seasonal hiring, and measurement definitions used by surveys and agencies.
