➤ Why does a tariff usually reduce foreign exporters’ total revenue?
A tariff raises the domestic import price and reduces import quantity. Since foreign producers normally receive the unchanged world price per unit, their total revenue falls because revenue equals price received times quantity exported. The magnitude depends on demand and supply elasticities; more elastic demand leads to a larger drop in export revenue after a tariff.
